The majority of Canadians (94%) feel it is important that they should help the environment by choosing greener products, according to a poll conducted by Environics Research for the Air Miles reward programme.

However, the poll also revealed that two-thirds of the Canadians surveyed (67%) admitted holding back due to concerns about the validity of marketers' green claims, while 66% cited a perception that green products cost more (66%), and 59% mentioned the difficulty of finding genuinely green products.

As a result, Air Miles has introduced its new My Planet programme to enable its 9.5 million+ active points collectors to make more environmentally friendly choices in their everyday lives through green rewards, green information, and a supporting online community.

The first phase of the My Planet programme helps collectors be greener and save money at the same time by providing more than 100 reward options that contribute to a more environmentally-sustainable lifestyle. For example, these options include free transit passes, green energy services, and environmentally friendlier cleaning products, among others.

In addition to products and services, Air Miles collectors in Canada can redeem their reward miles for tax-receiptable cash donations to WWF Canada (a conservation organisation that has recently become a charitable partner in the programme).

My Planet also includes an online Learning Centre that provides green information, facts, articles, tips, and community forums to help members make more environmentally friendly choices.

According to Bryan Pearson, CEO of LoyaltyOne's Air Miles Reward Programme, "Canadians have voiced their concern for the environment and their strong desire to help, and our goal with the introduction of My Planet is to enable them to make more sustainable choices every day."
