Alaska Airlines adds mileage transfer option
Alaska Airlines has announced the addition of a points transfer option (powered by Points.com) to its Mileage Plan frequent flyer programme, giving members the ability to transfer mileage between accounts to allow mileage aggregation with family and friends.
The idea behind the new option is to help make Mileage Plan miles easier for members to use, and to reach redemptions more quickly.
Making transfers Through the programme, which has been implemented for the airline by Points.com Business Solutions, members are allowed to transfer up to 100,000 miles per year from any Mileage Plan account to another. Miles can be transferred in blocks of 1,000, up to a maximum of 30,000 miles per transaction.
The mileage transfer service is available through the airline's web site, and members are expected to pay a transfer fee of US$25 per transaction, plus US$0.01 per mile transferred.
Easier redemptions According to Rick Rasmussen, Alaska's director of loyalty marketing, "Mileage Plan members can now share their miles with family and friends: For example, if parents want to fly their child home from college for a visit but don't have enough miles individually, they can combine their miles to get the free ticket."
Miles can be redeemed for travel on Alaska Airlines and its sister carrier, Horizon Air, as well as over a dozen other airline partners worldwide.
