Albertson's customer wins $75,000 with loyalty card

The circumstances could hardly have been better, both for the customer and Albertson's, when she won $75,000. Who says there's no Santa Claus?

A customer of Albertson's supermarket's Dallas/Fort Worth Division has just been presented with a cheque for US$75,000. She was chosen at random from all the customers who had shopped with their Preferred Card loyalty card since November, when it was launched (see story). She had the choice of the money or $100,000 towards a new house.

The circumstances could hardly have been better, both for her family and for Albertson's. Sarah Kapten and her husband John are natives of Kenya and have recently moved to Texas from Kansas, where they have lived for the past twenty years. They have never won anything before. In December, they gave away their family van to friends who were experiencing bad times and, since then, they have used their small sedan for their family of five.

Albertson's is one of the world's largest food and drug retailers, with annual revenues of approximately $37 billion, and is based in Boise, Idaho.
