Book club loyalty scheme targets interest groups

The US-based Book Of the Month Club (BOMC) has launched a loyalty programme to encourage its book readers to expand their literary range, offering a special range of book savings and selections based on each member's own tastes.

The Smart Reader Rewards loyalty programme offers a Reader's Choice service, through which members choose one of six categories (Mystery & Suspense, History & Biography, Fiction, Non-fiction & Current Affairs, Home & Family, and Health & Self-Help), each of which contains the latest best-sellers and critically acclaimed books. This determines which books they will be sent each month. Every month each member receives the featured book from their chosen genre by mail, and they are able to change their genre each month if they want to.

Members are eligible for discounts of between 30% and 80%, and have the opportunity to buy up to US$220 worth of books for the token sum of US$1. Free shipping and handling on orders over US$24 is an extra perk.

Additionally, a new Booksearch Plus service provides members with more than 70,000 titles in addition to those available to non-members. If members can't find the book they want in the catalogue or on the web site, they can use Booksearch Plus to track down a copy at no additional cost.

Online, the Smart Reader Rewards web site provides features such as book reviews by other members, interviews with authors, excerpts of books, and sneak previews.
