Caribbean telco joins Magna Rewards coalition

The Caribbean mobile telecommunications operator Digicel has joined the Magna Rewards coalition loyalty programme, automatically crediting Magna Rewards points to the cardholder's account every time they use Digicel's pre-paid or post-paid mobile phone services. Points are also issued for the purchase of Digicel mobile phones.

Magna cardholders who use Digicel's mobile services can link their Magna card and Digicel phone numbers by sending their 16-digit Magna card number as a text message to a special Digicel number. They can also link Digicel phones belonging to other family members to their Magna account, so that they receive points for all Digicel calls made by their family members.

Nurturing loyalty Mike Parris, Magna director, and Kevin White, Digicel Eastern Caribbean CEO, agree that the new partnership should bring benefits to the customers of both companies. "Magna cardholders benefit simply by buying and using any Digicel mobile phone, and they then have the freedom to use their points for purchases at any Magna partner outlet," explained Parris.

"Our customers' loyalty is important to us, and this partnership will help our customers receive even more benefits for being a Digicel customer," added White. Magna cards are also to be made available from all four of Digicel's dealer outlets.

The coalition Magna Rewards currently operates in Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and St Lucia. Established in 1996 it is a coalition loyalty programme which enables members to earn and redeem rewards on variety of products and services such as mobile phone services, groceries, clothing, gift, pharmacy and hardware purchases, travel services, insurance and automotive products.

The programme has a total of 852,000 members who conduct more than US$750 million worth of retail sales annually. Card penetration is highest in Barbados, where Magna began operations eight years ago, with 1.5 cards for every household. According to Parris, cardholders are signing up at the rate of about 1,600 per day. Existing Magna Rewards retail partners include Scotiabank, ESSO, Shell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Digicel, SuperClubs, and Digicel.
