More than half of IT professionals leave their employers within three years, and it seems that it’s not due to money. This is revealed by a new survey from people3, a Gartner, Inc. company. According to people3’s 2001 IT Market Compensation Study, three factors ranked higher than pay in keeping employees loyal: the use of new technologies, offering learning and training initiatives, and providing a challenging technical environment.
According to Linda M. Pittenger, president and CEO of people3, “While turnover in IT organizations is generally lower across the board, the workload of the IT function is expected to increase 50 percent by 2005. It is absolutely essential for IT and human resource leaders to have the right programmes and policies in place to attract and retain IT staff during the next few critical years.”
The study also found that (of 104 IT jobs analysed) that it took longest to recruit network architects (4.2 months) and database administrators (3.4 months). The median base salary for the IT jobs surveyed was just over US$62,000, an increase of almost 2% on last year.
