Local businesses to reward loyal community
Residents of Santa Monica, California, USA are being encouraged to help provide funding for public school sports, literacy, science, technology and arts programmes, through a new 'MyCommunity Card' through which retailers, manufacturers and other local businesses are giving back a percentage of sales.
The MyCommunity Card programme, launching today, brings together the Santa Monica/Malibu community and the Education Foundation of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. The Education Foundation is a non-profit fund-raising organisation that aims to preserve, support and enhance a range of educational programmes.
Prepaid cards Dozens of local retailers and small businesses are to give a percentage of sales from the use of the MyCommunity Digital Currency stored value payment card (provided by CEO America Inc., operator of the Creditz digital currency) to support the Education Foundation.
Tens of thousands of free MyCommunity cards are to be distributed to local parents and students, who can then load the cards with funds via electronic transfer or by cheque. The stored value cards can then be used at participating merchants who support the MyCommunity programme.
Ambitious target Over the next 12 months, the programme expects to distribute over 100,000 cards through various promotional events and activities, including through cooperation with the Santa Monica-Malibu School Board, Santa Monica-Malibu PTAs, Chamber of Commerce, the city authorities of Santa Monica and Malibu, and the students (who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the extra funding).
The educational programmes to benefit from the scheme include funding for literacy, funds for innovative class programmes, science scholarships, and For The Arts (co-chaired by Mel Gibson and Greg Coote) - an endowment to permanently fund arts education in dance, drama, music and visual arts.
