Starbucks unveils Odyssey loyalty rewards program powered by NFTs
Highlight: Starbucks has long been known as the Third Place in a customer’s day. Now, there’s a virtual aspect of the Starbucks experience – maybe a Fourth Place? – as Starbucks has introduced its Odyssey loyalty rewards program powered by NFTs. Members will access Odyssey through existing rewards program login, so it is not clear if this is actually a new program or an enhancement to Starbucks Rewards. Starbucks said that it sought to explore what is called Web3, which is what is known as the next iteration of the World Wide Web, or the decentralized web, and how it could benefit its customers. Wise Marketer wrote about Web3 just last week. We wouldn’t jump to this conclusion, but some journalists are proclaiming that Starbucks really wants to ruin its loyalty program with this NFT program.

Wegmans ends self-checkout app after too much shoplifting
Highlight: Last week we published news about Quik Trip’s launch of a self-checkout store along with a cautionary note from Amazon that it was focusing its Just Walk Out technology on stadiums and airports rather than general retail. There are challenges to fully automated self-checkout and one of them – shoplifting – has caused US grocery Wegmans to temporarily end the use of a “scan and go”app at its stores. "Unfortunately, the losses we are experiencing prevent us from continuing to make it available in its current state," the company said in a statement.
Get healthy and fit with Y Rewards from the YMCA
Highlight: The YMCA is a staple in many US communities. The locations are the center of many family oriented activities and offer a full slate of health and wellness programs. Powered by Perkville, the YMCA has launched Y Rewards. The program has interesting structure that adapts to the “non purchase” profile of the business. Points can be earned for enrollment, check-in, referral, birthdays and more. You can learn more here.
My Place Hotels – My Place Stay Rewarded – partnership with Wrangler
Highlight: My Place Hotels is a growing mid-tier hotel chain that launched its Stay Rewarded loyalty program in June 2019. The chain is franchise driven and the program was launched with the intention to “enrich brand-guest relationships by addressing the demands of today's guests in collaboration with the objectives of the brand.” The hotel chain is currently running a promotion with Wrangler, one of the partner brands that reinforces its overall value proposition. You can add this to your research library of datapoints on hotel loyalty programs.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Self-checkout abusers feel it is "easy to do, reaps rich rewards, and even if they are caught, leads to little or no sanctions being applied". Adrian Beck, emeritus professor at the University of Leicester in the UK from a report which analyzed 140 million scan-and-go app transactions.
