Nectar rewards consumers for recycling old phones

With a new scheme launched this month, the UK coalition loyalty programme Nectar is giving its cardholders the chance to turn unwanted mobile phone handsets into Nectar points while at the same time helping people in less developed countries.

Nectar has teamed up with the charity Greener Solutions to offer Nectar cardholders the opportunity to earn points and dispose of unwanted phones responsibly. The phones are sent to less developed countries where they will be used by people otherwise without access to such equipment - extending their lifecycle and making good use of what would have been redundant technology.

Variable point awards Cardholders can trade in the phones via the mobile2points link on Nectar's website, which calculates instantly how much a handset is worth in points. For example an old Motorola V3 Razr is worth 3,000 Nectar points. The amount of points exchanged per phone depends on its age and condition.

The steps that customers must follow to get a quote are:·  Log in at Nectar's web site;·  Click on the mobile2points icon on the homepage;·  Choose the phone's brand name and model and click 'Add to cart'.

The number of points that will be paid is then displayed.

Carriage prepaid Once the transaction has been confirmed online, a prepaid envelope is automatically despatched so that the phone can be sent to Greener Solutions. The points earned are then added to the customer's Nectar account within 28 days of Greener Solutions' confirmation of the trade-in.
