Nectar signs up UK energy utility partner

The UK coalition loyalty programme, Nectar, has signed up the energy utility provider, EDF Energy, as the programme's exclusive energy sponsor. The utility's three retail brands - London Energy, Seeboard Energy and SWEB Energy - are to join Nectar from the end of the year.

From the end of 2003, the 5 million residential customers of EDF Energy's three regional retail brands will be able to register to collect Nectar points through their gas and electricity accounts.

EDF will use Nectar points to reward its customers for staying loyal to its brands, and also for making specific decisions about the way in which they pay their bills. Customers will be able to collect extra points for prompt payments, or payments by direct debit, and more points if they choose to become 'dual fuel' (both gas and electricity) customers.

"We have always wanted to add a utility company to the Nectar programme and I am very pleased to say we have achieved this with EDF Energy," said Rob Gierkink, CEO for Nectar's operator, Loyalty Management UK (LMUK).

EDF Energy (previously known as London Electricity Group) is an integrated energy provider, involved in the generation, distribution, and supply of electricity. The company provides electricity to almost 7.8 million homes and businesses, and claims to account for approximately 25% of the UK's electricity distribution. Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive for EDF Energy, commented: "Participating in this leading loyalty programme reflects how committed we are to our customers."
