Points-based rewards for ride-sharing commuters

A US-based programme that helps travellers to share trips with others and save the environment, then rewards them for doing so, has just signed up another sponsor.

Newport Mansions, operated by The Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island, has become a 250,000 Mile Sponsor and will reward regional commuters who are doing their part to relieve global warming by sharing rides using the NuRide service. The reward includes free admission to America's premier collection of historic houses and gardens.

The sponsorship is part of the Connecticut 2,000,000 Mile Rideshare Challenge, a regional event bringing together commuters and sponsors to help alleviate some of the area's transportation and environmental problems.

The challenge The Challenge was launched in January 2006, and involves thousands of commuters who will share rides resulting in 2,000,000 fewer miles being driven and over 88,000 gallons of gasoline being conserved.

To take part in the programme, commuters use NuRide's online ridesharing programme to find other people going their way.

The NuRide website calculates the savings for each trip and awards participants with points for each confirmed ridesharing trip, which can then be redeemed with participating sponsors for rewards.
