Report measures the charitable and social good mindset in India
Indian based Points for Good has published The Giving Index 2022, a report that measures the charitable and social good mindset of the country.
India has risen to become the world's fifth-largest economy, thanks to significant economic development over the last decade. Not all this growth has been inclusive, however. The gap between the top 1st percentile and the bottom 50th percentile has continued to widen. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic has driven over 200 million Indians into poverty.
According to NITI Aayog, India needs to almost double its percentage of GDP devoted to social causes from its current rate of 7 percent to nearly 13 percent by 2030 to meet its UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets. Tracking progress towards this goal is one objective of The Giving Index, making this an important report to track.
Points for Good executive Mala Raj commented, “this is the third report in the series, highlighting key trends in giving behaviour in India in terms of cities donating, causes donated to, and periodicity - with the pandemic dominating most giving in the year.”
The report provides insights into emerging trends in donations in terms of new and evolved causes and upswing in digital contributions. There were significant changes in donor behavior notes in the report and we’ve got highlights here for your review.
- Cash remains the most popular way to donate, though donations through digital wallets and mainstream payment cards are on the rise
- 82 percent have participated in at least one philanthropic activity in the previous 12 months and 75 percent have donated money to a charitable organization
- CSR donations are predicted to expand at a 19% annual rate
- The giving habit has penetrated small-town India as is seen from the number of cities from which donations came
- Mumbai came out as the most charitable metro – highest in terms of donations and amount
- This proportion of repeat donors has improved y-o-y indicating a growing committed base of donors
