The online shopping comparison service Shopping.com has launched a programme designed to reward its most loyal users in the USA by offering cash back on internet purchases made as a result of using the Shopping.com web site.
The new Cash Back programme aims not only to change the way consumers think about shopping online but also to help online consumers become smarter about their shopping habits and to have more fun in the process. Membership of the Smart Shopper Club programme is free of charge, and members are promised rewards of anything up to 5% of the amount of each purchase (excluding shipping and tax) from participating stores.
Holiday season spending
The programme was intentionally launched at the start of the busy holiday shopping season, when most shoppers spend far more money than usual. According to the US National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to collectively spend some US$219.9 billion on the 2004 holiday season, and the average individual consumer will spend an average of US$702.03 - a 4.5% increase over 2003's average spend.
How it works
Shoppers can identify where the Cash Back rewards are available by looking for a green cash-back symbol and dollar value throughout the Shopping.com web site. The process of earning cash back is easy enough: upon visiting one of the participating online stores, the shopper will see a small window prompting them to join the Smart Shopper Club. After signing up, the shopper can log into their own account page on Shopping.com where their personal Cash Back purchase history and status are given. Shopping.com automatically mails Cash Back cheques to members every three months.
"We believe this is the perfect way to reward customers who count on Shopping.com to help them find the right product from the right store at the right price," commented Sarah Leary, Shopping.com's product vice president. "With holiday shopping already well underway, we know people will appreciate saving the extra money."
