Starwood offers new 'SPG Flights' awards

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has updated the terms of its frequent guest loyalty programme, Starwood Preferred Guest, to include a new 'no blackouts' policy that includes award flight redemptions.

The new SPG Flights option allows programme members to book flights on hundreds of airlines with no blackout dates, if they search for and book their flight through the programme's web site while redeeming Starpoints for the entire cost of the flight.

Earning while burning Because the bookings are effectively treated as cash bookings, members will still earn airline miles for booking air travel through the SPG Flights programme.

Starwood Preferred Guest members also normally earn 2 Starpoints for every eligible US$1 spent at over 890 participating Starwood hotels and resorts worldwide. In addition, up to 20,000 Starpoints per calendar year can be purchased online, and Starpoints do not expire if the membership is kept active.

Multi-lingual SPG Flights aims to give members unrestricted access to flights through the redemption of SPG loyalty points, without the redemption fees, booking fees, and taxes often associated with frequent flyer programme redemptions.

The SPG Flights programme is currently available in English language, but Starwood says that the web site will be translated into French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese within six months.

Starwood Preferred Guest launched its existing 'No Blackouts' programme nine years ago, allowing members to redeem loyalty points for standard hotel room accommodation whenever a Starwood hotel had a room available.
