UK grocery competition starts getting tougher

The latest UK supermarket share figures from TNS Worldpanel show further signs of a consumer spending slowdown, with market growth dipping to 3% from a 3-year peak of 6% in May 2007, suggesting that competition in the sector will be increasingly difficult.

According to Edward Garner, director of research for TNS Worldpanel, the change of pace in the sector reflects, in part, a renewed concentration on price competition (such as the latest Tesco 'Swingometer' advertising campaign).
