Umpqua Bank launches debit card loyalty scheme
In the US, Umpqua Bank has launched a new 'Umpqua Debit Rewards' programme that awards the bank's debit card users cash back for shopping at local businesses using their debit card.
Customers of the bank can earn back up to 20% on their initial purchases, and up to 14% back on other everyday purchases made at participating local businesses and online retailers.
Local loyalty encouraged Umpqua's programme benefits participating local businesses by promoting them to members, building loyal behaviour patterns through cash incentives, and also by providing a donation to the local Boys & Girls Clubs for every qualifying purchase.
The programme was developed for Umpqua by Rainbow Rewards, which specialises in debit rewards programmes that aim to benefit consumers, businesses, and local non-profit organisations.
No redemption process Unlike points based loyalty programmes, Umpqua's Debit Rewards programme automatically applies cash back without the cardholder having to complete a redemption process.
In addition to shopping local merchants, Umpqua Debit Rewards members can also earn rewards by shopping online through the Rainbow Rewards e-shopping portal, which offers a range of popular merchants such as iTunes, Nordstrom.com and REI.com.
Regional roll-outs All existing Umpqua debit cards in Oregon and Washington have rewards capabilities. California cardholders will be able to join the programme starting in late July 2007. Local businesses are invited to join the programme by applying online or by telephone.
Ray Davis, Umpqua Bank's president and CEO, explained: "Our new programme allows us to support local businesses in a way that drives awareness, rewards consumers for supporting local companies, and supports local non-profit organisations."
