Loyalty in Argentina

Argentina, with 46M inhabitants, is LATAM's 3rd largest economy and has a strong track record in loyalty marketing. A strong population of well-trained professionals are actively supporting programs situated to participate in this complex and dynamic environment. Even in a market with high inflation rates (with peaks close to 100 percent per year in  recent years) and permanent changes in regulatory frameworks, loyalty programs have been sustained over time and are evolving through expansion of offers and significant improvements to the customer experience (CX).

Currently, banks, insurance companies, retailers of all types, hotel/restaurant chains, gas stations and  airlines are actively sponsoring loyalty programs. These are focused on the customer, but also address the needs of partners and the broader value chain.

Companies invest in delivering multi-channel access, product simplicity, integration, and customer recognition. Consumers make it clear they want convenience, personalization, accessibility, and ease of use.  Multiple surveys carried out in the country show that customers wish for their needs to be anticipated and don’t want to be flooded with product offers that are difficult to manage.

Pandemic and inflation

The covid-19 effect spawned more digital solutions, and all parties involved in the commerce chain adopted new technologies. Consumers who were reluctant to engage in digital and online transactions have accepted and adopted it, resulting in true digital transformation and a true cultural change.

THIS DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IS HERE TO STAY AND TRADITIONAL ORGANIZATIONS MUST ADAPT AND FIND THE BEST MIX OF NEW TECHNOLOGY AND CHANNELS.

Argentina is experiencing the headwinds of inflation as is the rest of the world at this moment. The inflationary environment poses challenges in maintaining the attractiveness of loyalty program offers, as the habits and preferences of consumers are impacted, with people feeling that their potential earning in the loyalty program may not have significant impact influencing purchase of desired products. The perceived dilution of the value of points wallets creates a challenge for all involved in the value chain. The accumulation curve is suppressed, sometimes impacting engagement levels. At this time, those consumers who opt for aspirational products hold even more potential for profitability and show the greatest potential to build strong brand affiliation over time, because their experiences are "unforgettable".

To adapt and keep pace with these changes, it is necessary to make systematic revision of the "business rules" of each program such as the models and coefficients of accumulation of  points, integrated proposals of tools, investment by weight consumed, cost of the point, as well as the catalogs of prizes. This is achieved by having solid KPI measurement tools, listening to the market and performing ongoing benchmarking.

A look at Banking and Financial Services (BFSI)

The Financial sector has been one of the great activators of loyalty marketing, with the aim of attracting portfolio and then rewarding the profitable behaviors of the same. With the passage of time, it becomes difficult for the consumer to make brand choices based on subtle differences among the multiplicity of offers.

The most modern models implemented in the country include a loyalty ecosystem with the development of interrelated and customer-focused modules, based on challenges, personalized, with innovation in the development of social impact actions and betting on immediate redemption. The great challenge is to ensure that these creative and ambitious models are simple to understand by users and that they do not "get lost" along the way.

The industry is evolving rapidly from the introduction of new players. In particular, the development of OPEN BANKING is proposed as a model capable of making available, organizing and enhancing the incredible volume of data and applications that currently strengthens the management of finances. All of this could lead to new business models and loyalty programs.

In Argentina there was an explosion of digital wallets but at present very few maintain the necessary growth dynamics to succeed. Those that stand out share common traits; from the moment they go on the market they offer their loyalty and retention proposal as part of the product and allocate their communications to obtain "differentials" for use (exclusive discounts for use, points programs, participation in raffles for exclusive events, linking with cryptocurrencies).

In this market the star player is Mercado Pago, a company belonging to Mercado Libre, the most valuable corporation in Argentina today, but slowly other providers are making inroads, such as MODO and Ualá.

Some industry data:

According to our benchmarking, we can say that the offer of the main banks is similar, although there are differences as can be seen in the following table.

Read: 13% of banks offer movie tickets as a reward redemption.

The redemption modalities are diverse and include Points + Pesos, discounts, vouchers and giftcards.

Successful programs achieve results close to the following values:

Main challenges

Reward Catalogs

  • Need to create a rewards ecosystem that keeps the relationship with customers active, affords quick redemption times, provides aspirational benefits and provides choice (dynamic redemptions).
  • Integration with Marketplace, discounts on purchases, payment in installments, exclusive access or orders, programs by groups of customers according to profitability, presence in weighted dates.
  • Offers that drive social impact, linking solidarity actions that can be supported by customers, promoting products made by organizations of the social economy.
  • Incorporating benefits that tend to create "emotional" impact for customers.

Business rules

  • Create structures with simple rules of participation and accumulation that are kept up to date over time.
  • Defend and protect the relationship generated, offsetting the negative effects of inflation and sustaining sufficient purchasing power to keep the client motivated.

Innovation

  • Keep a focus on creativity and innovation, as customers quickly get bored of value propositions.
  • Add personalization based on location knowledge (proximity) leveraging the analysis of the characteristics and needs of different customer segments.
